The Impact of Unsightly Toenail Fungus

Nail fungus is a chronic condition that impacts quality of life and can even lead to serious health problems for patients with diabetes or immune disorders. Treating nail infections is difficult because the infection is under and inside the toenail, making it hard for other treatments to reach and destroy the infection.

Treatments such as medicated nail polish or oral medications may be associated with side effects or serious drug interactions. Home remedies such as bleach, vinegar, mouthwash, or household cleaners are often tried but ultimately fail to resolve the problem.

Laser Treatment for Toenail Fungus

Hyperblue Plus is an innovative, FDA-cleared laser treatment system designed to combat toenail fungus effectively. This advanced technology combines blue light and near-infrared light to target and eliminate fungal infections in toenails.

The treatment is non-invasive, painless, and requires no downtime, allowing patients to resume normal activities immediately after the quick 12-minute sessions. Hyperblue Plus offers a safe alternative to oral antifungal medications with minimal risk of side effects. It can treat multiple toes simultaneously and is typically administered by our Albuquerque podiatrists over a series of treatments for optimal results.

While promoting clearer, healthier-looking nails as they grow out, Hyperblue Plus can also be used in conjunction with topical treatments for enhanced effectiveness.

What is Onychomycosis

Nail fungus, also called onychomycosis, is a common condition estimated to affect up to 20% of the population. Dermatiphytes are the fungi most commonly responsible for causing this condition.  They are specialized organisms that live off of keratin which is the main component of nails and skin.

Onychomycosis causes a thickened, yellow, or cloudy appearance of the nail plate.  The nail can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed.  There is usually no pain or bodily symptoms…unless the disease is severe.

Everyone is at risk for infection because fungus is present everywhere in the environment.
